Nick Davidson, who served NZ Football as its honorary president for 10 years, has died aged 76.
Davidson, a King’s Counsel, was a leading figure in sports administration, helping to establish the New Zealand Football Foundation in 2010 and through his legal expertise working with FIFA's investigatory panel. He also held significant roles with NZ Rugby Union and NZ Cricket.
New Zealand Football Foundation Chair Aliesha Staples said "Nick's contribution to football in New Zealand and specifically in the formative years of the Foundation was hugely significant. We are grateful to have had the benefit of his expertise and passion and know he will be hugely missed.''
Davidson spent a decade as NZ Football’s honorary president, stepping down in 2015, when he became a High Court judge serving in Christchurch. He graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1971, starting work as a barrister and solicitor in Christchurch. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1996 working on many high-profile cases.
A tribute to Davidson on LawFuel said ''A man who had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life, he not only achieved success in the law but also enthusiastically and proficiently involved himself in a range of high-level sporting, charitable and community organisations.''
